What to Look for in a Freight Transport Company

Posted on: 5 January 2015

Freight transport companies offer great convenience, especially when you need to transport a large number of goods over a long distance.  There are a number of freight transport companies that offer more or less similar services. For this reason, choosing one amongst the several companies may not  be very easy. This article discusses three things you should look for in a freight transport company.

Good Geographical Knowledge Of Your Locality

When looking for a freight transport company, it is important to ensure that the company is familiar with your locality as well as your intended destination. A large number of clients take it for granted that the company is familiar with their area, which may not always be the case.

You can establish whether your chosen company understands your locality by looking at the routes that they frequently cover. Ideally, your intended destination should feature in one or several of these routes.

Geographical knowledge of your locality can help prevent unwanted delays in the delivery of freight items.

Insurance Protection

It is also important to ensure that your chosen freight transport company is insured. Insurance is important for freight companies because it is their only guarantee that the company will compensate you in the event of damage to, or loss of, your property mid-way through the journey.

At the very least, a freight transport company should have an insurance policy that covers situations of theft as well as third-party damage to property. If in doubt, you should not be afraid to ask representatives of the company to produce physical evidence that they're insured.

It goes without saying that you will pay slightly more for a fully insured company. The good thing, however, is that the safety of your property is guaranteed.

Value Added Services

The freight transport industry is characterized by cut-throat competition between rival companies.  Each company, therefore, has to look for creative ways of attracting clients, and offering value added services is one of the best ways to do this.

For example, a common value added service is the temporary storage of freight items. It is possible that the freight items may reach the intended destination before you. Your freight company of choice should be in a position to temporarily store the items until you can collect them. This means that the company should have a storage facility or should partner with local storage facilities in the new place.

Other companies may offer packaging of freight items as their value added service.
